Indie Artists Make Industry Connections at L*A*M*P Events
by THE G-MAN, MusicDish Associate Writer, Immedia

Los Angeles, Calif. -- With an ongoing series of seminars, workshops, and music business events, Los Angeles Music Productions (L*A*M*P) is providing information and interaction for artists, managers, producers, indie labels, publishers, and music marketing professionals. Three successful career connections took place as a direct result of L*A*M*P's "Top Producers and Engineers Reveal All!" event held at the Knitting Factory last year.

WHO WAS WHO AT THE "TOP PRODUCERS REVEAL ALL"  L*A*M*P EVENT:
The day-long workshop featured some of the most highly successful producers, mixers and engineers in the business, including Rogers Masson (Marilyn Manson, Reeves Gabrels, Emmylou Harris), Dave Aron (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Sublime), Robin Danar (Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Donald Fagen), Joe Warlick (Dru Hill, Diana Ross, Doobie Brothers), and Carlos Warlick (Will Smith, Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur). Also appearing during the event were Michael C. Ross (Christina Aguilera, Vanessa Carlton, Dixie Chicks, Eric Clapton), Matt Forger (Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen), Keith Cohen (Celine Dion, Prince, Madonna, Seal, Kylie Minogue), and Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam, Meat Puppets, Michelle Shocked, k.d. lang).

SUCCESS STORY FOR LEA LONGO:
Lea Longo is based in Montreal, making her the most distant attendee of the Top Producers seminar. "I was able to play one of my songs for Michael C. Ross," Longo said, "and he was immediately interested in working with me on co-producing and re-mixing it for the American market." This confirms what many in the buisness have known for years, that Ross has great ears. Since that time, the song called "Ugly," produced by Dan Cinelli, has won two songwriting contests, the Canadian Music Week National Songwriting Competition, and Montreal's Mix 96 Songwriting Contest.

In addition, the song has been placed in heavy rotation on Mix 96, a top-rated commercial station in one of Canada's major markets. The musical director for the station praised the record, calling it "an uplifting song, bright, with hooks from start to end."

Now, with Ross behind the board for the next version of the song, the U.S. market will soon be heading Longo's voice. "I am very excited about the new mix that Michael is doing for the American release of this song," Longo stated. This isn't the only breakthrough for Longo this year. Her song, "Someone Like Me," was in the 20th Century Fox movie "Cheaper by the Dozen" starring Steve Martin. And since she sings in four languages (English, French, Spanish and Italian), there is tremendous potential for her as a global artist.

"I heard a lot of songs that day at the L*A*M*P event," Ross stated. "Lea's was by far the best. I remember saying to myself, 'I would love a chance to beat that demo'. Well, I am getting my chance. It has been great to see all that Lea has been able to get going on her own. It just shows some of the opportunities independent artists can take advantage of, when they make the extra effort."

SUCCESS STORY FOR JULIA FOLEY:
Julia Foley, a Phoenix-based singer/songwriter, flew in just to attend the Top Producers event.

"That day, I met producer/engineer Keith Cohen," she stated, "and since then he has been working with me on my indie project. What an opportunity it's been! He has brought in some of the best players in town for my project. We wrapped up the first three songs in January and I've already had three 'forwards' by Taxi," referring to the fee-based music industry screening service.

"There's no way this would have happened had I not attended the L*A*M*P event," Foley added. "It was so worth the plane fare to get there! What's just so cool about it is the places I went to record and the people he brought in such as Paul Pesco (did a lot of stuff with Madonna, was on two of her tours, J Lo, Mariah, etc etc) Rafael Padilla on percussion (Ricki  Martin, Christina, Gloria Estefan), Doug Grigsby, bass and programming (producer for Teena Marie), George Black (programming and keys), and
Cara Jones on backup vocals. And Keith of course is awesome. What a privilege! Especially when you're living in Phoenix!"

Two of Julia's songs spent six weeks in the top ten at Broadjam.com. "Ancient History" went to #1 in Electronic/Dance and "Seeing U" went to #2 in Jazz/lounge..."Seeing U"One is still there under the Region/Arizona tab under JJ FOLEY. Julia's song "Seein U" is #1 on Broadjam/Jazz Lounge after eight weeks in the top ten!

SUCCESS STORY FOR THE G-MAN:
Scott G, who records as The G-Man, made two connections at the L*A*M*P event. "First, I played some of my music for Pete Anderson and received the finest quote for my press kit I have ever seen: he called my music 'Moby meets Bowie,' and I don't see how that will ever be topped."

The second connection directly affected G-Man's career in an extremely positive way. "I began interacting with Matt Forger," G-Man stated, "who has now contributed two tracks to my PLATINUM AGE OF THE REMIX album, just released on iTunes and Delvian Records. The value of being able to work with someone like Matt, plus the tremendous publicity boost the album received from his involvement, simply cannot be estimated."
